#47: Chip Ingram on Finding Your Place in God’s Story
On this episode of STEP INTO THE STORY Podcast, host Phil Tuttle talks with Chip Ingram, Bible teacher for “Living on the Edge.” Their discussion covers Chip’s life journey and spiritual development.
Chip describes his childhood in a post-WWII family with a father traumatized by war experiences who medicated with alcohol. Though they attended church, it was more social than spiritual. At 18, after achieving his high school goals (basketball scholarship, good grades, girlfriend), Chip experienced profound emptiness, leading him to challenge God to reveal Himself.
God answered through a seemingly random opportunity to attend a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp. There, Chip was impressed by the authentic male relationships he witnessed and ultimately accepted Christ. He began reading the Bible daily and experienced immediate life changes.
In college, Chip was mentored by a bricklayer trained by The Navigators who taught him spiritual disciplines. This relationship significantly shaped his commitment to Scripture memory and daily Bible reading.
After college, Chip met his future wife, Theresa, who had survived a difficult first marriage that ended when her husband abandoned her with twin boys. Chip later adopted these boys and had two more children with Theresa. During seminary, he juggled full-time work, studies, and family responsibilities.
Chip discusses his time leading Walk Thru the Bible (before Phil was president), describing it as a challenging period that revealed his unhealthy self-dependency. This experience led to significant personal growth when he realized God wanted him to focus on teaching Scripture rather than organizational leadership.
The conversation concludes with Chip sharing his current ministry focus: discipling God’s people, equipping pastors and leaders, and reaching the next generation. Both men reflect on how their ministries have evolved to today, being able to focus more on teaching and less on administrative duties, allowing them to be more effective in their core callings.
