Life In Honduras

The Walk Thru the Bible seminars have been an instrument of our church to help many couples undergoing marital conflicts and we have been able to help other churches creating a multiplying effect in the teaching of the subject and couples counseling through the seminar A Biblical Portrait of Marriage. I can surely say we have seen results.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502, Honduras was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, the most dominant of which were the Mayan Indians. The Spanish controlled the country until the Mexican Revolution in 1821 after which Honduras joined the Central American Federation. The country became an independent nation in 1938. Today Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America and relies heavily on trade with the United States. The economic situation in Honduras is slowly changing as their exports are diversified into non-traditional commodities and investments from nations other than the U.S. Life today in Honduras is characterized by:

The absence of a middle class; there is an unequal distribution of income and very high unemployment throughout the country

A high dependency on exports including bananas, coffee, and sugar

Investments by other countries are helping the economy turn around; Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea have built manufacturing plants called maquiladoras throughout the country

A strong belief and dependence on family; Hondurans are very invested in interpersonal relationships especially with family and friends. The people are very warm and welcoming; hospitality is a high priority and visitors are made to feel welcome and valued

A rich and varied culture including art, jewelry, and literature influenced by the Mayan civilization
