What People Are Saying About
Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense

By Phil Tuttle with Chris Tiegreen

quote marks

For all of us who are frustrated because life seems more like a maze than a clearly sign-posted journey, here is a book that we have desperately needed. Phil Tuttle points out that, surprisingly, God often works His special and productive purposes in seasons of life where clarity is the missing ingredient. Digging deep into the life of Joseph, Phil demonstrates that God manages our confusion toward good and productive ends. Read, and be encouraged!

Handling biblical narratives well is a rare skill to develop and an artistry to present. Few people have the art and heart to do it as well as Phil Tuttle. His insights are spot on. If detours can be the path to one's destiny, the study of Joseph through this work that is so well named—Detour—will be a great series for building your faith and a catalyst for developing your spiritual integrity.

Oftentimes, when God called a leader for a great mission, He would call him out of Egypt. It happened with Moses and it happened with Jesus. In Detour, we see how God uses Joseph in Egypt to save His people, and ultimately the entire human race. God uses Joseph to be part of the plan He has for the world. As Joseph endures animosity, betrayal, prison, and hardships, he did not realize that he was being prepared to fit the big picture of God's plan. And because the part designed for Joseph was so big, the preparation was so profound and painful at times. Joseph shaped the future of many nations.

Phil Tuttle is a gifted Bible teacher. I love the way he takes stories from the Bible that we all know, yet crafts them into life applications and timeless principles that we can all apply to our modern times. Definitely a must read.

Phil Tuttle is an outstanding Bible teacher with keen insight who does us yet another favor in Detour. In his first book, Crucible: The Choices that Change Your Life Forever, Phil uses the life of David as a platform to remind us of God's ability to build character in our lives—all for His honor and glory. In Detour, Phil uses the life of Joseph to illustrate God's ability to take us through the twists and turns of life, which can appear to be aimless wandering, but Phil reminds us that this is often how God works. It may feel excruciating at times but there is a purpose; God is writing a bigger story and fitting us into it in ways we cannot see. Regardless of the challenges, pain, and adversity, having our "story" woven into the fabric of God's larger story is worth it.

Phil Tuttle and Walk Thru the Bible have blessed me and so many other people with sound biblical teaching and innovative resources. Phil has a way of taking principles and characters from the Bible, and igniting fresh understanding in the minds of his readers and listeners. When I discovered that he was publishing Detour, based on the life of Joseph, I was thrilled. Joseph is a man whose remarkable life can apply to almost any season, or detour, we are facing. I know we will all be blessed by Phil's insights into the life of this awesome man of God.

In the modern world, where faith is fading and everyone is detouring in almost every part of his or her life, a shining example for any Christian is Joseph and his choice of the straight path of God. Phil Tuttle's book, Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense, touches us deeply because we can see ourselves facing the same kinds of detours as Joseph, and ultimately winning. Want to follow the path of Jesus? Read Phil Tuttle's book!

In this book, Detour, Phil Tuttle has shown us deep insight on how to remain strong, faithful, and committed in one's divine calling in the face of apparent discouragement and disappointment. This book, in my opinion, will be a healing balm for all those that are cast down and discouraged because of what life brings their way.

I recently returned from Nicaragua, where I watched Phil Tuttle of Walk Thru the Bible teach six sessions on the life of Joseph (which is the subject of Phil's book Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense), to 250 pastors from the areas surrounding Managua. I wish you could have been there! His heart for these pastors and his ability to effectively communicate inspired them to go back to their churches and change their congregations. What a conference! What a great man of God and an organization with whom we love to partner!

I have long appreciated Phil Tuttle's pastoral heart that is evident in his personal and practical exposition of Scripture. He seeks to bring timeless biblical principles to life and apply them in relevant ways to the issues we face today. His new book, Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense, nicely exemplifies this application-rich process.

When things do not go exactly as we thought they should go, we have probably put on a long face, grumbled, and questioned God. And perhaps we muttered something like: "What am I supposed to learn from this?" Detour combines two givens. One is the mind, humor, and transparency of a guy named Phil Tuttle observing the life of an interesting Bible character, Joseph, who faced more than one disappointment in life. It sounds like a recipe for finding answers to the question: "What am I supposed to learn from this?"

Phil Tuttle has the heart of a pastor and the mindset of a master teacher. Through Crucible he has challenged us to consider "The Choices that Change Your Life Forever." Now we're ready to take the next step on this biblical journey through Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense. Phil's God-given ability to share previously unconsidered truths, while keeping a strong grip on the big picture of the Bible, makes this a series that we'd love for every Christian in the UK to engage with.

Previously in Crucible, against the backdrop of King David's life, Phil Tuttle showed us how to embrace life-altering crucible moments as God's loving and active intervention to forge in us hearts after His own, and to grow leaders who shepherd with integrity of heart, skill of hands, and a passion to finish strong.

Now in Detour, Phil Tuttle pieces together the puzzle of Joseph's life and shows us how—from a starting point of dysfunction, deception, jealousy, revenge, favoritism, unfairness, rejection, and isolation—God used detours, delays, disappointments, dead ends, and disasters as logic-defying shortcuts to a masterpiece life, as only God can.

Thank you, Phil, for equipping and encouraging us big time!

It's like I discovered a new part of who I really am and came to see my true self in Christ. Reading Phil Tuttle's book Detour has helped me realize God's sincere good will for my life, despite the disappointments and detours I may have experienced along the way. Tuttle's in-depth spiritual viewpoint of Joseph's life unveils distinctive characteristics of God that were once obscure to me. I am certain that Detour will be a source of blessing to all who read it, just as it has been to me. I pray the Lord will bless Phil Tuttle abundantly and give him the grace to continue the life-changing series of biblical characters.

Sometimes, God takes His children down different paths so that they can learn and grow in wisdom. Phil Tuttle has captured that characteristic of God and magnificently explains it in Detour. Without any doubt, this is an excellent book for all those who are looking for God's will upon their lives.

Throughout my career in education, I have relied on Walk Thru the Bible to provide practical training and deep biblical insight to guide me as well as those I serve. Phil Tuttle's Biblical Character Series and his newest title, Detour: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn't Make Sense, provides encouragement for those who are tempted to lose hope when life takes an unexpected turn. In this study, we learn valuable lessons from the life of Joseph by studying his response to trials and temptations that came his way. We are strengthened for life's journey as we learn to trust God's sovereignty, and we understand more clearly that He has an overarching purpose for all that we go through in life. Thanks, Phil!
